The Pre-Vinylite Society Journal is a unique publication featuring essays, stories, interviews, and inspirations on commercial art and its contexts. The mission of the PVS Journal is to engage the reader in a conversation about the cultural and historical contexts of our current sign painting renaissance and other related fine and applied arts in the 21st century. It does not feature instructional or material-based articles on the how-to of sign painting, lettering, etc. but rather aims to offer context to the field of sign painting. It discusses signs, art, architecture, semiotics, language, history, culture, and ideas related to a renewed appreciation of craftsmanship and the aesthetics of our built environments. The PVS Journal treats sign making and other applied arts not merely as trades to be mastered, but as topics worthy of varied discussion.
Issue One is a 64 page, perfect bound magazine, printed on high quality paper and featuring original artwork by Josh Luke of Best Dressed Signs on the front and back cover. It features essays, stories, interviews, and inspirations on sign painting, art, design, and their contexts, written by a variety of artists whose work spans from calligraphy to architecture.
